I’d like to speak a little truth to the powerless

March 19th, 2008

When you speak truth to power…they don’t care.

Try speaking truth about power, cialis sales capsule instead. That they don’t like.

(And could we please stop using that stupid phrase, now?)

I like that phrase. The truth is easy. Recognizing the truth is easy. Bringing truth to power is where things get dangerous for the truth-teller.

I was watching JOHN ADAMS on HBO …

You caught me in the middle of editing it, John. (I tinker. I can’t help it.) As I’m sure you know, no writing is ever really finished…it’s just abandoned.

But I just used that phrase. Sometimes it has an inherent irony that you just can’t replace.

Just like the phrase “inherent irony” has an inherent snootiness that’s making me wish I had some dirt under my fingernails.

It’s only in the past three years or so that I’ve begun to notice the phrase. At first, I didn’t like it, but now it’s growing on me more and more.

Speak truth at a cocktail party – not so challenging.
Speak truth to power? You have to deal with consequences.

GW does NOT employ people capable of speaking truth to power, evidently. The White House is a giant echo chamber …
