Eugene Kane wants people to comment on his blog using their real names…

March 19th, 2008

…which I would gladly do EXCEPT that posting any comment at all on Mr. Kane’s blog requires me to first provide the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel with the following information:

  • my email address
  • my physical address
  • what gender I am
  • my year of birth
  • my household income
  • whether or not I own my home
  • my marital status
  • and a few more odds and ends.

That information is the sort of stuff people pay good money for. And the folks at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel are fooling themselves if they think I’ll just give it all away for the privilege of making a comment that I could just as easily make here……like I just did.

Most of that information is optional. I have been registered there for quite some time without filling in any of those fields.

Household income, homeowner, marital status, and the odds and ends were the optional.

The really valuable stuff: email address, physical address, gender and birthdate are not.

Didn’t ask me for anything. But I might already be registered. Age does that to people.

Or they might have it because I take care of my subscription online.

But it certainly scares me when folks put their information in the text of their comment.

Elliot – just because they are asking for it, doesn’t mean that they will get the correct information. I have put their address down for my registration, told them that I was unemployed, etc….
