Be the best victim you can be!

April 4th, 2007

I think Milwaukee Journal Sentinel guest columnist Steve Paske didn’t go far enough in his article recommending that victims cooperate fully with an armed robber.

He forgot to mention that if you’re being raped, viagra usa unhealthy you should just lay there and take it with a smile.

And if they kill you at the end of the rape or burglary, it was probably your fault because you weren’t convincing enough when you promised not to identify them to the police.*

*And sarcasm detected in this post by the reader was fully intended by the author. Thank you for your attention.

Actually Paske has a good point. I was robbed at a gunpoint about an year ago. I fully complied with the demands of the robbers and they let me go away. I called the police after the robbers ran away. I think that my decision was much smarter than getting killed by fighting with the robbers. These robbers are thugs and they should receive strict punishment. But fighting with them is a very foolish thing. Many times we big people like Huggins and Munz get killed because they think that they can use their big size to fight the robber.

This post was originally longer. I wrote that sometimes cooperation is the right thing to do and at other times cooperation is the one thing that you should never do (for example, never let someone force you into a vehicle) and sometimes it doesn’t matter what you do because they are going to shoot you anyway.

Only the victim can choose how he/she is going to respond at the moment of confrontation. I’m glad you got away with your life, Tim, but my friend’s son didn’t when his robber was disappointed that he didn’t have more cash on him.

My ultimate point is that tellling eveyone to cooperate is no more correct than telling everyone they should fight. And Paske’s post felt way too much like blaming the victims for my taste…despite his disclaimers.
