What age is the right age to drink, drive, or enlist?

April 25th, 2008

This post at The Volokh Conspiracy about the appropriate age to consent to sex, generic viagra sick get an abortion without permission, viagra capsule drink, treat or drive elicited the following comment:

“Age to enlist, commit your life for five years (or more due to Stop-Loss), and die for your country serving in Iraq: 18

Age to drink a cold beer on a hot day: 21”

But what the commenter doesn’t understand is that the reason we allow enlistment at 18 is because only the very young are foolish enough to think they are invincible and can’t be killed…which is the exact same reason we DON’T let them drink at the same age.

Plus once you get out of the United States with the Military they follow the local drinking age so even when I was 19 I could drink overseas on base or off base out on the “economy”

We really do need to settle on one age of consent/coming of age birth date.

the hodgepodge we have 12 to hunt with an adult 14 by yourself 16 to drive 18 to enlist, vote and marry and 21 to drink is just silly

I would be comfortable with 18 being the magic age move driving up to 18 bring drinking back down to 18 and leave voting and everything else the same.
