The left side of the blogosphere is going nuts over John McCain not knowing how many houses he owns

August 22nd, 2008

They seem to think this hurts John McCain in two ways:

  1. He’s rich! And that means he’s evil.
  2. Now he can’t call Barack Obama an elitist anymore!

Well, buy cialis tadalafil I hate to break it to you guys, but there are problems with both those conclusions.

For one thing, most American’s don’t hate rich folk the way Democrats seem to. (They, themselves, want to be rich and as soon as they hit the lottery they’re looking forward to forgetting how many houses they own, too.)

For another, Barack Obama ain’t poor…so the rich thing is a losing horse to ride.

And “elitist” has nothing to do with money. Elitist is a matter of mindset, not moola. You can be poor and an elitist snob or rich and just regular folks.

You’ll never paint John McCain (a man who almost flunked out of the Naval Academy, looks like he has a beer every night and probably swears like a sailor) as an elitist.

But the guy who eats arugula and thinks that the common folk cling to guns and religion because they’re bitter? Him, you can paint as an elitist.

It’s not just that he loses track of how many houses he owns, it’s that he loses track of a lot of things–like whether or not he wants to re-negotiate water rights, which side Iran supports in the Iraq war, whether his health care plan raises taxes on most Americans (hint: it does), whether he recited the names of Packers or Steelers while a POW, whether he voted nay on The Pill and yea on Viagra, and so on.

And it’s not just that he owns so many houses, but that he’s incredibly out of touch with most middle-class America–he doesn’t know the price of gas, he suggested Americans wouldn’t pick lettuce for $50 an hour, he thinks people earning $4m are the middle class instead of the top 1%.

In that one moment of befuddlery, two significant weaknesses of McCain and his campiagn coalesced into one zen-like moment of perfect failure.

I’d be willing to bet a buck that he knew exactly how any houses he owns but that he thought he could slide the question with a “joke.”

He knows how it looks. He can’t be that big of a fool.
