But remember… ignorance of the law is no excuse… even if we have so many laws that it’s impossible for you to know them all, let alone understand them.

How many laws do you think you could memorize and understand, Elliot? Is that what you’re saying… we can only have as many rules as the average citizen can understand?

On the other hand, should we be required to carry a law book everywhere we go to make sure we’re in compliance? Hell, even God only needed 10. And I think most of us could get by with just one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Golden_Rule

Name a time and place on Earth when all the laws were within reach of the average man’s brain. Be grateful that today they are written down. You want a large population and the complexity that comes with freedom? Then there will be more laws than you can memorize.
