Something I just don’t understand about this election…
September 3rd, 2008
I believe that both the Democrats and the Republicans have nominated good men to be President of the United States.
(And now that I’ve offended ALL of my readers.)
Both are smart.
Both have served their country and communities.
And both represent authentically American experiences.
They may be the best men their respective parties have nominated in 20 years.
And yet the actual campaigning is some of the worst I’ve ever seen.
Mischaracterizations and outright lies are being told by both sides.
There’s little discussion of actual policy differences.
Hypocrisy runs rampant.
The mainstream media seems to have come completely off the rails and abandoned objectivity entirely.
So my question is this:
Why do these two candidates – who may be among the best of men – seem to bring out the worst in the rest of us?

You don’t think they’re at fault for any of that?

I don’t know, Nick.
I’m not with them in their private conversations with their staffs.
I do have to say, I don’t think Senator Obama was personally involved in the disgusting filth I saw a few days ago at DailyKos.
And I don’t think Senator McCain is emailing out pictures of Barack Obama in Muslim garb.
