  Are you sure those endorsements were pro-Burkee and not just anti-Senselessbrenner?

  You know, the guy that takes all those trips and rams unfunded mandates like REAL ID, which may not even happen now, now our collective throats.

  Most supporters of Burkee either seem to have issues with Sensenbrenner or know Burkee from having been students (current or past) of his.

  Now I have to go examine this agreement with capper. I hope he was being sarcastic :)

  I know the man personally. He is NOT a stealth liberal or Democrat. In fact, back in 2006, knowing that he was a conservative, I tried to convince him to help raise money for the Wisconsin GOP (because the College Republicans were organizing a fund raiser in Mequon and there were two guys running for GOV – the money wasn’t exactly pouring in for either Green or Walker). Burkee’s position was that if he was going to donate political dollars, it would be to a candidate directly. His stated reasons were the types of things he’s campaigning on – smaller government, lower taxes, less spending (especially defecit spending). For the record, Jim Burkee favored Scott Walker over Mark Green before Walker left the race.

  And as a Republican activist and volunteer, my impression was that while I agreed with Sensenbrenner on many issues, he was kind of a jerk. I mean, he didn’t call me names or anything, but at events where I’d try to talk to him (and he didn’t have anything better to do at the time but mingle), he was dismissive and acted like he couldn’t give me the time of day. And at the time, I thought highly of him. Don’t get me wrong – I voted for Sensenbrenner in 2006 because he was better than the alternative. But after three decades in office, and being all but unchallenged until now, and given an opportunity for fresh conservative blood, I’d take Burkee over him.

  And I wouldn’t call the Walz candidacy a stunt – had Walz stayed in the race, there would have been more debate (and more debates). Instead, since it was only Burkee and Sensenbrenner, the incumbent would only agree to do one debate to a crowd not to exceed 100 people. And only in a primary race. It’s good for healthy debate, especially after THREE DECADES in office. Isn’t taking Republicans for granted how the Federal GOP got in trouble, eventually losing all congressional power in 2006?

  People want the GOP to go back to basics. And I’d say that even to a small extent, just by running Burkee has done that – Sensenbrenner never would have signed the tax pledge unless forced to because of the Burkee challenge. I’d be willing to say that Sensenbrenner is right more than he is wrong, but a solid conservative district can be much better represented.

  And there is Burkee support outside the blogosphere, even though Nick and I seem to be the only ones sticking our necks out in the Cheddarsphere. I’m willing to look at Republicans critically, even if Mark Belling will automatically and uncritically oppose anyone anti-Sensenbrenner. Which is too bad – usually Belling is the voice standing up for conservatism and rooting out the RINO’s, right? But sometimes Belling shuts his brain off and just makes snap judgements and proclaims his opinion to be the gospel.

  But knowing Burkee for as long as I have and looking at where he stands on the issues, he is consistent. I would not have lifted a finger for his campaign, much less drive up the weekend before the primary election to volunteer, if I thought Burkee was a fake or a fraud. What you see is what you get – he’s a straight shooter.

  Sorry for my faux pas, capper ;^)

  I’ll only say that the Burkee-Walz co-campaign was a stunt in that they did it jointly to grab some attention and free press–not necessarily a bad ploy.

  And I would have to say I didn’t see much between their positions.

  I’ve only seen Sensenbrenner once, at the forum, and he was nice enough, ‘course he was no doubt in campaign mode.

  As I’ve said on my blog, I agree with both on some issues and disagree with both on others, e.g., I disagree with both of their positions on immigration, or at least the points they say. It’s a fine point, but there.
