Language matters

June 4th, 2007

For a while, best viagra decease folks on the left were upset that the Republicans were refering to the estate tax as the “death tax.”

They claimed that Republican strategists were trying to manipulate voters by controlling the language.

I finally realized that the reason it pissed the left off so much is that they think creating manipulative euphemisms is their job.

After all, generic cialis how many people would go along with “Affirmative Action” if it were called “Race-based Preferences?”

Or “Social Security,” if it were called “Massive Wealth Transfer from the Young to the Old?”

Of “redeployment,” if it were known as “Abandoning Iraq to an Orgy of Ethnic Cleansing?”

How many people would go along with “staying the course” if it was called “babysitting a civil war that will cost us billions of dollars and many more of our soldiers.”?

Or “Patriot Act” if it was called “giving the government the power to access to your medical records, tax records, information about the books you buy or borrow without probable cause, and the power to break into your home and conduct secret searches without telling you for weeks, months, or indefinitely?

Or “Spreading democracy” if it was called invading some countries based on false intelligence yet tolerating many of the dictators who are our allies?

All good points, Tim. (You’ll notice I started with a Republican one right at the top of the post. ;)
