Gallary Night is quarterly?

April 19th, 2006

Did anyone else know that they do Gallery Night in the Third Ward FOUR times a year? (And when did it become Gallery Night AND Day?)

Four times a year?

Two would be sufficient.

One would make it special.

Four times is just greedy.

Do we have Summerfest four times a year?

The State Fair?

The Zoo’s Ala Carte?

Maybe someone should remind the merchants in the Third Ward that you can go to the well one (or three) times too many.

[…] The imaginary blogger, Eliot at From Where I Sit, thinks that the artsy-fartsy crowd in the Third Ward is overdoing it by having their bigcelebration, Gallery Night every few days… well, I’m exaggerating a little bit. […]

I enjoy gallery night being quarterly. The company I work for actually partakes and it’s great to see rotating work all the time. It’s an excuse for Milwaukee people to go out and get culture, not just slammed at the local pubs.

I like art more than most.

I subscribe to the Rep, attend the Florentine regularly, and buy original art about once a year.

(One of my most precious possessions is an original drawing by my favorite artist Alan Servoss. The love of my life gave it to me.)

But Gallery Night isn’t about culture, it’s about commerce.

I’ve even heard complaints from gallery owners that they’re sick of every little restaurant in the Third Ward jumping onto the bandwagon and hanging “art” so they can be included in Gallery Night.

I’ve got nothing against the event in general. But four times a year turns something special into just another sale that offers things on special.
