Free speach for me, but not for thee

October 7th, 2006

The nice thing about students literally repressing Minutemen founder Jim Gilchrist‘s speech at Columbia University last night is that it reminds us that some on the Left in America have actually come to believe that free speach means nothing more than shouting down anyone who disagrees with you.

As one of the students said:

“I don’t feel like we need to apologize or anything. It was fundamentally a part of free speech. … The Minutemen are not a legitimate part of the debate on immigration.”

It stunneds me that this student can’t see the irony in believing that HIS free speech gives him the right to decide who else deserves to be heard.

What are they teaching at Columbia?

And how many of these students are attending the Columbia School of Journalism?

Elliot, they can’t see the irony because they’re still ignorant kids. Many, unfortunately, will stay that way. Some may even be “true believers”, indoctrinated beyond repair. Woe unto we the people, as we’ve allowed this to come to pass. When they’re in charge, the Constitution will be completely buried. What’s left of it, anyway.

Isn’t ironic that they don’t see their own irony?

Seriously, liberals are not for free speech except for the speech that counters cultural norms and sparks “debate.” Touting accepted societal “norms” is oppression by a “ruling class” that stifles “honest” debate.

Therefore, homosexuals need free speech, Christians do not. Pro Abortionists deserve free speech, Pro Life protestors do not. And do it goes…
