Congratulations to Milwaukee for avoiding a 16.4% tax increase

But it’s hard to see a 9% increase as a victory.

E/M, the superintendent’s budget proposal last week was more ambitious than the one proposed and passed in May, which had just a 2% levy increase.

However, when the Board passed that preliminary budget back in May, it did so noting that if the changes to law included in Doyle’s budget were not passed, they would have to fall back on an estimated 7.5% increase.

A 9% increase is not significantly different from exactly what the Board thought would happen if events played out as they did.

I have no idea why, given that history, everyone–media, mayor, common council, bloggers–are so surprised at what happened. Sheesh.

Don’t worry, Jay. No one is surprised with taxes go up. Death and taxes, remember? ;)
