Another difference between Liberals and Conservatives
October 9th, 2007
The comment thread on this post at The World According to Nick demonstrates something I’ve often thought:
(Smart Liberals like my friends Jay, Capper, or Grumps, will try to point out that my last statement isn’t true when it comes to national security. But I respond by pointing out that Conservatives don’t think that warrantless wiretaps are restrictions on their freedom.)

Which of couse is just naive. Govenment will abuse that power as well… hell they already are. They can snoop into your bank records at this very moment, and the bank cannot even tell you or be faced with legal sanctions. And that’s just the tip of the iceburg.

As usual, I don’t disagree, Nick.
But I think my greater point about Liberals versus Conservatives still holds.

I must disagree, Elliot. I do not speak for Jay or Grumps, but you are slightly mistaken. I am not anti-gun, per se. I own some land up north in a very rural area. I realize the need for some weaponry, and do own two shotguns and a rifle, mostly for critters. But I also realize that one does not put out a fire by pouring gas on it. I mean it there are many people out there that would scare the shit out of me if they were armed. Even more so when they start spouting off like John Wayne.
And my psych eval commnet over by Nick’s site…I think you would acknowledge that information is a very important thing, especially when making decisions that could have a major impact on others, like arming an unstable person with an assault rifle, or invading a middle eastern country.
For the rest, I do treat it as a case by case thing. Helmets are not necessary as long as it doesn’t affect my insurance, or they splatter grey matter all over my vehicle.
I would say it more accurate to say that conservatives recognize the world to be a dangerous place, and want to make it even more so
The saddest part, and I think most would agree, is that there are the fools out there that would make such desire for regulations or out-right paranoia necessary.

I gotta tell you the truth, Cap. I think you might not be a Liberal. You sure you wouldn’t rather be a Libertarian? It’s not too big a jump. They both start with the letter “l,” for example. ;)

Sometimes I wonder if I am a lesbian in a man’s body.
I wouldn’t make it as a libertarian. I am too much for equality and balance, socially speaking. Plus, that would mean I would have to give up laughing at the libertarian stands at state fair, and that’s almost as much fun as making the republicans froth at the mouth. But thanks for the offer. : )
In all seriousness, I would have to be classified as liberal on a sliding scale, but I am just probably more moderate than some.
