A quick thought on Frank Lasee’s idea of arming teachers and the rabid reaction to it.

October 6th, 2006

While I have my own reservations about Frank Lasee‘s proposal to to allow trained school personnel to carry concealed weapons, viagra sale case I’m beginning to get annoyed by the overwrought reaction of most of his critics.

Every time I hear someone say that the idea is just crazy, ampoule I imagine a classroom full of children with a teacher standing at the front of the class.

An intruder with a weapon comes into the room.

Luckily, the teacher is armed.

Just as she is about to defend the lives of her students, a well-meaning person steps into the room and confiscates her gun.

“I’m sorry,” the person says, “it’s just not reasonable for us to let teachers have guns.”

The person then leaves the teacher and the students alone with the armed intruder.

This IS what people who deny the rest of us the opportunity to defend ourselves with a concealed weapon do every single day. They leave us helpless at the hands of people who don’t mind violating every gun law ever passed.

Bottom line?

I think the politicians and voters who deny us our right to self-defense are nearly as culpable for our victimization as the criminals who rape, rob and murder us.

UPDATE: A respected “law blogger” also thinks the idea isn’t that crazy.

EDIT: I changed “just as culpable” to “nearly as culpable.” On reflection, I decided I should ratchet the rhetoric down a notch.

It’s a bonehead idea. Is that the same thing?

Yes the idea of an armed citizen defending children against criminals who intend to do them hard is a terrible idea. Why is trusting someone we already trust to educate and take care of our children to possible defend them if the need arose such a bad idea.

The proposed bill should require training and would not require everyone to do it. Just those who wanted to and could meet the requirements.

I am sorry this whole knee jerk reaction that having a guns in the hand of law abiding citizens anywhere is bad is wrong. When you start telling the crazed gunman that buildings like schools and churches don’t allow guns those will be the first places they attack. They will not attack places where they know they might run into people who can defend themselves. When was the last time you heard of a gunman attacking a police station in the United States

The whole idea of Gun Free School zones only serves to reassure these attackers that they will be finding unarmed lambs to slaughter.
