  Are you forgetting that real Christianity is tolerance of others and their belief systems.

  Just because you, yourself, may not believe it is correct to do ‘X’ does not mean that you should force your will upon others. The only exception is if doing ‘X’ directly or indirectly interferes with your life in a negative way.

  A person having an abortion in private does not affect you in any significant way. The only argument is that it may infringe upon the rights of the fetus, which is where the argument stems from in the first place. And not everybody may believe that a fetus is “a living human being from conception.”

  Which brings us back to real Christianity. Tolerance of others and their beliefs.

  “You know he’s been demoted, don’t you?” Jack pointed to the St. Christopher medallion on the key chain.

  She snapped open the wallet and dropped a five-dollar bill next to her cup. “Once a saint always a saint, as far as I’m concerned. I’m not one of those Catholics who think the Vatican never makes a mistake.”

  Jack snorted. “Then you’re not a Catholic.”

  “Pardon me?”

  Elliot set his fork on his plate and raised his hands as if he were gesturing for the two of them to remain on their own sides of the table. “Let’s not start this, folks.”

  Mary Faith dropped the wallet back into the pack. “No, Elliot. I’d like to know what Jack means by telling me I’m not a Catholic.”

  “No offense. Real Catholics like me just don’t understand why people like you insist on calling yourselves Catholics. If you can’t even concede the infallibility of The Holy See, why don’t you just call yourselves Protestants and be done with it?”

  “Just because I don’t agree with everything the Pope says doesn’t mean I can’t be a believer, Jack.”

  “I suppose you differ with him on birth control?”

  Mary Faith stiffened. “And women priests.”

  Jack squinted at her. “And abortion?”

  “Yes, and abortion.”

  “I can’t believe you’re in favor of killing babies.”

  Elliot snapped his head up. “Jesus Christ, Jack.”

  “That’s exactly who we’re talking about, El. And you’re going to have a hard time convincing me that He was pro-choice.”

  Mary Faith sat very still. She held the strap from her backpack tightly between her hands as if she were considering wrapping it around Jack’s neck.
  “I don’t believe in killing babies, but I also don’t believe in a bunch of men telling women what we can and can’t do with our bodies. Personally, I would never have one, but that doesn’t give me the right to tell other women what to do with their lives.”

  “What about the lives of their children?”

  “I’m not going to have this argument with you, Jack. We have it all the time on the editorial board and I have yet to see someone change their mind, but I would like to remind you that you’re a cop—and that abortions are still legal in this country. No matter what the Pope says.”

  Jack set his fork carefully on the edge of his plate. “That don’t make it right. You know, sometimes when we’re breaking up an abortion protest, cops will lay down right next to the people they are supposed to be arresting. It’s the damnedest thing you ever saw. I’ve never done that, but every time I’ve arrested somebody who is doing nothing more than obeying his or her conscience, I think about what all those Nazi soldiers said during the war trials, ‘I was just obeying orders.’ It wasn’t an excuse then, and I’m not sure it’s an excuse now.”

  She stood up and sidestepped out from behind the table. “This topic is closed, Jack. I like you, but I won’t put up with being judged by anyone. Not by the Pope, and certainly not by you.” She patted Elliot on the arm. “Good night, El. Try not to let him rub off on you too much, OK?”

  “Sure thing, Mary Faith. Have a good night and I’ll see you tomorrow.”

  Jack retrieved his fork and ate his pie in silence as Mary Faith strode out the door.

  Elliot sighed. “Good job, Jack. Maybe you’d like to slash her tires while you’re at it.”

  What I would like to know is why those who claim to be pro-life, pro-fetus or whatever le nom du jour is, don’t give a crap when said fetus is post partum.

  I suspect, we care more post postpartum than most pro-choice people care for the fetus.

  Just because we don’t go for a government program, doesn’t mean we don’t care. I would dare say that more things are done for children by pro-life Christians than pro-choice people would like to give us credit for.

  Because it’s not a government program, therefore we don’t care? There are more ways to care than to support some government program.

  Now, having said that, personally I’m not too excited about the government or anyone else stepping in and telling me or my wife what reproductive rights we have. And conversely that I have the right to do that to someone.

  Would I counsel against it? Without question. Is someone going to hell (and I do believe in one) because they do? Not necessarily. Should they be prosecuted? Heaven’s no.

  I differ with many of my conservative (and Christian conservative) brethren but that’s probably the libertarian in me, I guess.

  You beat me to it, Dean.

  And I really have no interest in making abortion illegal. I just think it should be irrelevant. Considering the availability of condoms and birth control pills, there is really no excuse for most people to have an unwanted pregnancy in the first place.

  capper – there are some that don’t think the pro-life community has done as much as they could for those that choose life, but check out Sancuary House. Its run by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Great program where the moms can stay post-partum and get support as well.

  I commend you for doing what you do for a living. I’d be homicidal. My personal feeling about the abused and neglected kids you deal with? Parents get 1 shot to get their shit together. If they don’t – take the kids away, terminate parental rights, put them up for adoption. Get them out of the hell they are in and give them a shot – quickly. Oh – and as a kicker (I’m sure I’ll get howls for this one) put every mother with kids either in the system or being watched on Norplant. If they can’t take care of what they got – they shouldn’t have any more. That gives them a 5-year shot to get it together without bringing another kid into it.

  I have little to zero tolerance for people that hurt kids. There is a special hell for them. We should also send parents that murder their kids to prison for 25 to life instead of the wrist slaps they usually get too.
