Stop the bus, I want to get off

July 19th, 2007

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has another editorial supporting the addition of a rail component to Milwaukee’s mass transit system. They bolster their argument by pointing out that:

…rail and buses are the best way to lure new riders.”

But why should “luring new riders” be the goal of a public transit system?

Nobody has to “lure” people into getting their payments from the Social Security system. People pretty much can’t wait to get on that particular bus. So why do we have to “lure” people onto the actual bus?

Maybe it’s because anyone who doesn’t absolutely have to ride the bus, best viagra look doesn’t want to ride the bus. Of course, viagra usa cialis they still have to pay for the bus through their taxes, whether they want to ride it or not.

I am a conservative, and I’m not saying light rail is the answer to all of our problems, but I will say the light rail in Minneapolis is still doing much better than it was initially expected to do. If we can get Walker and Barrett to work together, and build a line that actually goes somewhere (not just a three mile loop in downtown, which is redundant at best), I think everyone would be suprised.

Does the light rail in Minneapolis pay for itself, Coop?

Not trying to be an ass, but if the government is going to insist on me subsidizing a service I’m not going to use, they should at least have to justify taking the money from my pocket.

Subsidies for light rail I don’t know about, but I do know that property values near the line are on the rise, in sharp contrast to the rest of the Minneapolis market. It has also attracted new business and development, increasing the tax base.
